Project Location: Perry, ME
Part of my house is on a slab, part dug out. The dug area is about 800 sq feet and is accessed via a small opening on one end of the house. The "crawl space/basement" is tall enough on the front side of the house to walk in hunched over (about 4 1/2 feet), then it slopes up to about a foot and a half on the back side. It's all basically ledge with dirt on top. There's a constant, small, steady stream of water that runs through from one area. I have a sub pump installed that runs constantly and a commercial humidifier, but it's still not enough to keep the moisture down. The pump kicks in about every 30 minutes... and every minute if it's raining. I've tried for 2 years to get a contractor to put in a perimeter drain, but everyone is backed up work wise and honestly, don't know if that would even take care of the problem. There's so much ledge and the water is coming in from the slab side and under the "retaining" wall to the dug side. The previous owner said it never did that until they added the house addition with the slab, he wondered if it opened up a small underground spring. I'd prefer to stop the water coming in altogether, but if I can't, I need to at least be able to control it so I don't develop mold issues.

We recently purchased our home and were told that the basement gets damp. We have discovered after the last few rainstorms that damp is an understatement. We have to go down with push brooms and push the water into the sump pump well. There are leaks in the wall that are not obvious when the weather is dry. The previous owners let their sump pump fall into disrepair until it not longer worked and never replaced it. We just had a new one put in, but the problem is more than just needing a new sump pump!!
