Job Stories From Waldoboro, ME
Damp Basement in Waldoboro, ME, Waterproofed The Right Way

A homeowner in Waldoboro had a basement which would regularly get wet whenever it rained. Even though this homeowner had a sump pump to remove the water from his basement, he had to way to guarantee the water would reach the sump. This allowed for the water to build up and dampen roughly a quarter of his basement. The homeowner thought this was no good, so once he saw an ad for TC Hafford Basement Systems on the TV, he gave us a call.

After the homeowner decided what he wanted done to help fix his problem, our crew got to work. The first thing we did was dig out the perimeter of the homeowner’s basement. This would allow for the placement of a WaterGuard system, to reroute any water trying to enter the basement through the walls, or up from the ground. This rerouting would lead the water to the newly installed SuperSump sump pump. This pump takes the water and pushes it up and out of the basement, keeping the floors and air of the basement dry. The water is then passed through an IceGuard filter once outside the house. This filter acts as a normal pipe when everything is functioning normally. But once the pipe gets blocked, be it by ice or other debris, the IceGuard will allow water to exit the pipe and prevent the whole system from backing up. This homeowner now has a 100% dry basement.

Our oil furnace has died finally. Time to replace it with a new one...or maybe move to a renewable/sustainable source. SO, we called in DeWitt Kimball to do an energy audit for us. One of the things we need to deal with is our moist basement. Our house is typical old housing stock you see in Maine. The main structure is ~185 years old, sitting on a granite foundation with a dirt floor. There is an addition which house the kitchen and a mudroom. The addition is on a cement block foundation. This is also a dirt floor, but is a tight crawlspace into which I have never ventured! There is a layer of plastic over the dirt under here, but it is woefully inadequate to the job of holding back moisture. I know the floor joists are suffering in this part of the building from rot, but hopefully not dangerously rotted. We're looking for a quote to seal the entire basement. We need to prioritize costs for this along with attic insulation and whatever new heating system we install. If you could call at your earliest convenience to set up an appointment to get a quote, I would be most grateful. We're hoping we can gather all the financial numbers, get a plan in place, and still squeeze in some camping before the summer is out! Best regards, Kathy

I have an antique post and beam cape (early 1800's) in the village of Weld with serious foundation problems. It is a stacked stone foundation that is crumbling in due to the water that runs through the cellar into an ancient stone culvert that goes beneath the road. The house is settling badly. Not sure if it's repairable or if the house needs to be jacked up and a new foundation poured in a different spot---but something has to happen before the house caves into the cellar! This house is unoccupied.
