How to Shop for a Good Sump Pump System

Tony Hafford, a basement waterproofing expert with over 20 years of experience, lists some of the most important features you should look for when shopping for a sump pump system to keep your basement dry.

His company, TC Hafford Basement Systems, has been installing sump pumps all over Maine since 1991, and Tony has had enough hands-on experience with sump pump systems to know what works and what doesn't.

The first important feature of a good system is a container that has an air-tight sealed lid. The lid is important for many reasons: it keeps water from the pit from evaporating into the basement, prevent debris that can potentially jam the switch or clog the pump from falling into the basin, and even more importantly, protects children and pets.

A water alarm is another extremely relevant feature. Should the sump pump stop or fail for any reason, an alarm will let you know when the water is 6 inches from rising up to the basement floor.

A must-have feature, however, is a battery-operated backup sump pump. This system will pick up the tab in case of power outages or main pump failure. Without it, a basement is never properly protected. Tony reminds us that a basement is an entire floor's worth of space than can only be used if you are able to keep it dry... all the time!
