Basement Waterproofing Case Studies: Crawl Space & Sump Installations in Peaks Island, ME Home Safe From Flooding

Challenge

A homeowner living in Peaks Island, ME recently had some flooding beneath their home. Water had leaked into both the crawlspace and basement of the home. Needing the spaces waterproofed to prevent future leakage, the homeowner looked online for a solution. They soon found TC Hafford Basement Systems and gave us a call to have the work done.

Solution

Once our installation crew arrived at the home, they started work on the crawlspace. To keep out future moisture, a vapor barrier needed to be put in place within the space. This began with a Drainage Matting being laid across the floor, resting just above the surface. Without laying directly on the floor, this layer of the barrier keeps water from entering the air of the space while allowing the water to flow and drain back through the floor. Next, to complete the vapor barrier, a CleanSpace liner was used to encapsulate the crawlspace. This liner is composed of a thin plastic which locks out any potential leaks from the walls or floor. This will keep the crawlspace safe from future flooding.

Next, to waterproof the basement, a sump upgrade was needed to keep up with the water. First a SmartSump sump pump was installed in the basement floor. This device will take in the water entering the space, forcing it up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. To protect this pump from power outages which would result in flooding, an UltraSump backup batter was installed. Connected to the SmartSump, the UltraSump will allow the pump to remove up to 11,000 gallons of water before requiring a charge. This will keep the basement safe from the harshest storms. Finally, to handle any existing moisture lingering in the basement, a SaniDry CX dehumidifier was installed. This device will pull in the surrounding air, separating any moisture from it. The collected water is passed to the sump for removal from the home while the dried air is circulated back into the basement.

With their newly waterproofed spaces beneath their home, this homeowner should no longer need to worry during any heavy rainfall. The vapor barrier and sump upgrades will keep this home safe from flooding for many years into the future!
